Everyone else whom I have hitherto heard speak on the subject. I have even referred the matter again to my Council, and they unanimously recommend a change of the device in the flag - something of the same idea and character as that which I ventured to submit to Your Lordship in my despatch No. 73 of 30th July last. I feel that it would be presumptuous in us, as we are situated at a distance from every facility for selection, to think of offering any definite design. We have done so, and can by no means do better.

Hence we have thought it safest to limit ourselves to proposing, entirely subject to Your Lordship's judgment, the substitution of the known and popular figures of Britannia and the British Lion for the somewhat eccentric figure which at present is conspicuous on the Colony's flag.

The mode in which our suggestion may be carried out must entirely depend on Your Lordship, but I am quite certain that to comply with Your Lordship's decision will content this Government, and in fact, I may say that however pleased we might be to obtain a flag with a tasteful device, our principal object is to get rid of that which at present exists.
